Would love to know your story. If you feel like sharing I am sure others would love to read your story. We all come to the decision to build for different reasons 🙂 Have you got water on site or dug a well ?

Hello and welcome to the site – always here to help

    • Thank you, and thank all of you for being honest people. It’s so damn hard to get any information or assistance in anything these days. I’m a traditional carpenter of 20+ years now, but am undertaking my first log home, by myself, and have been lost as to finding any type of resources without a fee.
      God bless you people.
      I hope I can contribute…[Read more]

      • Hi Mike 🙂 Happy to see you here and we are happy to help in any way we can, please ask questions and I am sure someone will try and answer and good luck with your log home 🙂

I have to say that it’s better to know now that most things you will do will have problems but resolving them and getting the job done make it all worth the effort 🙂 Be assured that when you are done you will have an awesome log home

  • That looks like a great start 🙂 It’s a great feeling to final get ground broken and start the foundations. Have you removed the forms yet? I usually leave them for 5 to 7 days depending on the weather.

Hello and sorry I didn’t see the message – best to post a new message then I get to see everything. There should be no need for any additional rebar in the piers

Metal brackets can be used also to make the form stronger at the corners

Hi – hope you got your saw sorted… What type of piers are you building? Let me know the style, ie: round, square or pyramid and I will give you some pointers… Most forms only need a frame screwed around them to hold them together. Use screws so you can take them apart and use them several times

      • I’m pretty much settled on the tapering piers like your website suggests. 24×24 at the bottom, 8×18 at the top

        • Hi sorry for not replying sooner – what is the diameter of your logs on average and how many logs high are your walls? I just want to be sure your forms are big enough. Make sure when you build your forms that you use 2×4 to brace the form – top middle and bottom. Wrap the 2×4 around the form and make sure they are screwed very well. For your size…[Read more]

      • Do I need to add any more rebar to the piers, for strength?

I think you are asking about installing the door / window frames and how they might affect the wall. When you have built and pinned your walls you will find they are now incredibly strong. You can secure the framing for your windows and doors after you have cut them out, directly to the logs. I have never experienced any problems doing this. Just…[Read more]

Gable ends made from logs are cosmetic as they don’t support any weight so you can do what you like. I agree with @Gibby that using logs is more difficult but can be done if you really want to 🙂

Great to hear you are making progress (slowly which is better than none) You don’t have to remove any material from your logs as curved is OK as long as the curve of the log is “outward” when you build the walls 🙂

How is everything going so far?

      • I may have to make make the log dogs when the time comes. I am still trying to find enough logs. I have 14 so far. Some are a little curved. Some are knotty. I am assuming that it would be ok to use the chainsaw to smooth them out a bit. Having to snake them up a 45 degree slope with cable and chain. Still hanging up at least one a day. Slow, but…[Read more]
